Free Living

We are in the process of converting our 50 acre farm back to nature. We are bee helpers currently not beekeepers. We started last year with 13 hives, had 31 going into winter and came out of winter with 30 strong hives. We have 3 different types of clovers, wildflowers, tall grass and forest. Bees live in standard hives, top bar hives and log hives made from old trees. My goal this year is to construct some living Zeidler type hives. We are not totally treatment free yet, using hopguard for mites but hope to be within 5 years. We study bee behavior by videoing and watching entrance activity. Bees in our top bar and log hives receive no treatment or human interference. The pictures are of the log hive which the bees chose themselves and we have not disturbed them since they arrived.
